Gold Standard: What It Takes & Why It Matters
The Gold Swimming Badge is the third and most advanced level in the German swimming education system. It certifies strong swimming skills, endurance, and the knowledge of the basic life-saving techniques. Especially for children and teenagers, this badge is a significant milestone – signaling to parents, teachers, and swim instructors: This swimmer is safe in the water. Moreover, many advanced swimming courses require the Gold Badge. Earning it means taking responsibility – for yourself and others.
Your Gold Checklist: What You’ll Need to Do
Swimming Skills´ requirements
To earn the Gold Badge, you’ll need to demonstrate specific swimming techniques and endurance. The following practical tasks, specified by DLRG and other organizations, assess how safely, efficiently, and diversely you move in the water:
-
Headfirst Dive & 30 Minutes of Swimming: Jump headfirst from the poolside and swim continuously for 30 minutes. You must cover at least 800 meters – 650 meters in one stroke (e.g. breaststroke) and 150 meters in a different position (e.g. backstroke), switching on the lane without touching the edge.
-
Start Dive & 25 m Freestyle: Perform a start dive and swim 25 meters using freestyle. Technique, rhythm, and breathing are evaluated – typical of competitive swimming.
-
50 m Breaststroke in 1:15 min max: This distance must be completed within the time limit, combining speed and clean technique.
-
50 m Backstroke (Scissor Kick or Back Crawl): Choose between 50 meters with scissor kick (no arm movement) or back crawl. This tests body tension and control.
-
10 m Underwater Glide from Swimming: Without pushing off the wall, glide 10 meters underwater directly from swimming. This trains breath control and body positioning.
-
Three Dives to apprx. 2 m Depth for Objects: Dive three times to about 2 meters and retrieve a small object like a diving ring each time – all within 3 minutes. This tests your underwater stamina.
-
3 m Jump or Two 1 m Board Dives: Choose between a jump from a 3-meter board or two different dives from a 1-meter board. This tests body control, technique, and courage.
Note: These requirements reflect DLRG guidelines as of 2022. No official updates for 2025 have been released.
Rescue Skills & Rules Test for Gold
-
50 m Rescue Swim (Push or Pull): Transport another person 50 meters through pushing or pulling – essential for rescue scenarios.
-
Theory Exam: Prove your knowledge of swimming rules and correct responses to bathing, boating, or ice emergencies, for both self-rescue and assisting others.
Responsibility in the Water – Technique & Awareness
These tasks build more than just endurance – they promote technique, courage, and situational awareness. The Gold Badge symbolizes more than athletic performance – it shows that you can take responsibility in the water. You’re expected to recognize and prevent danger early. That’s why understanding water safety rules is central to this level. Gold-level swimmers should think not just for themselves, but for others. Safety rules are the key foundation.
Mindset Over Age: Can You Get Gold at 8?
There’s no official minimum age, but the requirements are tough. Most children earn it around age 10 to 12, depending on training, motivation, and experience. Some highly trained children may pass the test at 8 – but that’s rare. Regardless, individual skill and safety awareness is more important than age. Parents should focus on quality instruction and regular practice – not rushing. For instance, although earning the Bronze or Silver Badge beforehand isn’t mandatory, it is strongly recommended to build skills gradually and safely.
Costs & Sign-Up: What to Expect
Fees vary by organization or local DLRG provider, generally ranging from €5 to €15. Some swimming schools offer prep courses at an extra charge.Registration is done through DLRG, Wasserwacht, or local swim schools. Many allow online appointment booking and provide advance info. Make sure to review the requirements and assess your readiness before signing up. A chat with a swim coach can help you decide if the time is right.
