Drowning Prevention Week: Raising Awareness, Saving Lives

Drowning Prevention Week by the RLSS (Royal Life Saving Society) is an important initiative to raise awareness about water safety. As a brand dedicated to protecting people in and around water, we at RESTUBE want to use this week to share essential tips on how to prevent water-related accidents – and why it’s crucial to treat water with respect, not recklessness.

Water inspires us – but it also demands caution

Whether at the pool, the lake, the sea, or rivers – water means joy, freedom, and adventure. But unfortunately, too many accidents happen every year due to underestimated risks or ignored safety guidelines.

With the right behavior and proper gear, most incidents can be prevented.

6 essential tips for staying safe around water

1. Know your limits – and those of your children

Not everyone is a confident swimmer – and that’s okay. The key is to know your abilities and not overestimate yourself. Children should never be left unattended near or in the water – not even in shallow areas.

2. Learn to swim – and keep practicing

Swimming is a vital life skill. Being able to swim makes you safer – but not invincible. Practice regularly and refresh your skills. For children, professional swimming lessons are strongly recommended.

3. Respect currents, waves, and weather

Even strong swimmers can quickly get into trouble in open water due to currents, cold shock, or changing conditions. Always check water and weather forecasts before going in. When in doubt – stay out.

4. Never swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs

It may sound fun to take a dip after a few drinks, but alcohol and water don’t mix. Your coordination and reaction time drop significantly, increasing the risk of drowning.

5. Carry a flotation aid – just in case

A RESTUBE Safety Buoy is compact, lightweight, and worn comfortably on the body – but in an emergency, it can make all the difference. Whether for yourself or to help others: carrying inflatable backup means extra peace of mind.

6. Know how to respond in emergencies

If you see someone in trouble in the water:

  • Stay calm
  • Shout for help
  • Use rescue aids (e.g., RESTUBE Safety Buoy, rescue ring)
  • Only enter the water if you can do so without endangering yourself

Being safe doesn’t mean holding back – it means being ready. Preparedness, mutual care, and the right gear like RESTUBE Safety Buoy allow you to fully enjoy the water – with confidence
